- You don’t have access to dental insurance
- You and your spouse/common-law partner (if applicable) must have filed your tax returns in Canada so that your family income can be assessed for the previous year
- Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000
- You’re a Canadian resident for tax purposes

What You Actually Pay Under the CDCP
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is not the same thing as free dental care, and knowing the difference before your appointment saves an unpleasant surprise afterwards. What the CDCP pays depends on your adjusted family net income, and there are three bands:
- Under $70,000 – the CDCP covers 100% of the eligible amount, with no co-payment from you.
- $70,000 to $79,999 – the CDCP covers 60%, and you pay a 40% co-payment.
- $80,000 to $89,999 – the CDCP covers 40%, and you pay a 60% co-payment.
There is a second thing worth understanding. The CDCP reimburses against its own national fee schedule, and that schedule does not always match the BC Dental Association Suggested Fee Guide that dentists here work from. Where there is a gap between the two, that difference is billed to you on top of any co-payment. It is usually modest, but it is real, and you are entitled to know about it in advance.
So before we start anything beyond a checkup, we work out what the CDCP is expected to cover, what your co-payment band means for you, and what is likely to be left over — and we put that in writing. Treatments such as crowns, partial dentures and deeper sedation also need preauthorization from the plan before they begin, which we submit for you.
How to Apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan
You apply to the CDCP through the Government of Canada, not through a dental office. We cannot enrol you, but we can tell you what you will need and book you in as soon as your coverage is confirmed.
To qualify you must meet all four conditions: you have no access to private dental insurance; you and your spouse or common-law partner have filed a Canadian tax return for the previous year; your adjusted family net income is under $90,000; and you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes. All four have to be true — missing one is the most common reason an application is turned down.
Have your Social Insurance Number and your most recent CRA Notice of Assessment to hand when you apply. Once Health Canada approves you, Sun Life sends your member card and your coverage start date. Nothing is covered before that start date, so it is worth applying well ahead of treatment you know is coming.
When your card arrives, call us on 604-558-2442 with your member number. We will verify your coverage, explain your band, and get you booked. Note that orthodontic treatment is not currently part of the plan, and neither is purely cosmetic work such as whitening or veneers.
